Tropical depression ‘likely’ forming in Atlantic, heading north

May 20, 2023

The National Hurricane Center is watching a system in the Atlantic that is “likely to become a tropical depression during the early part of next week,” according to its 2 p.m. update.

The system, made up of “disorganized cloudiness and showers,” was around 1,100 miles east of the Leeward Islands and “is expected to move northwestward at about 15 mph during the next day or so, and then turn northward over the central subtropical Atlantic by late Monday.”

Forecasters gave the system a 30% chance of forming in the next 48 hours, and 70% in the next seven days.

Its current path does not come near U.S. shores.
